Firefighter of the Month

We are pleased to announce that the city of Pearl Firefighter of the Month is Lieutenant Keith Hall. He began working with Pearl Fire Department in 2008 and promoted to Lieutenant in August 2013.  He is on the A Shift at Station 1 where he has proven that he is a great asset to the Pearl Fire Department and the community that he serves.  Keith has logged over 1500 hours at the State Fire Academy and is a Certified MS Smoke Diver and a Nationally Registered Paramedic.  Not only is he a vital part of the EMS delivery program that the city has implemented, but he also spends countless hours passing on his knowledge and sharing experiences with new recruits.  Keith lives in Pearl with his wife Angela and their four children: Hailey, Bradley, Preston, and Bailey.

We are proud to announce that the Pearl Fire Department Firefighter of the Month is Firefighter Phillip Ohlis.  Phillip is currently a firefighter on C Shift at Station 1.  Phillip began work with the Pearl Fire Department 3 years ago on June 10, 2013.  Phillip is a Nationally Registered EMT and has already documented 1000 training hours at the State Fire Academy. Phillip is a highly dedicated firefighter who has that a passion for the job that is contagious. Phillip also serves our country in the National Guard as a Black Hawk Helicopter Pilot. He has served both war time and state time. Since joining the fire department Phillip has set an example as being a leader who loves his job and takes pride in his work.

We are proud to announce that the city of Pearl Firefighter of the Month is Karl Kolb. Karl started with Pearl Fire Department on October 7, 2014.  Previously, he had served with the Vicksburg Fire Department for almost two years.  Upon hiring with the city, Karl made an immediate impact with his positive attitude and hard work.  He completed his EMT certification in 2012 and then began working on his prerequisites for the Paramedic program.  Karl enrolled in the paramedic program in the fall of 2015.  He demonstrated a strong work ethic in his studies and he has already received an achievement award from Holmes Community College. He is on pace to finish valedictorian of his class when he graduates in August of 2016.  In addition to his EMS training, he also has logged over 1000 hours of training at the Mississippi State Fire Academy.  Karl is highly respected by his peers and continues to be a great asset to the Pearl Fire Department.  Karl works on B-Shift at Station 2 on Pearson Road.

We are proud to announce that the City of Pearl Firefighter of the Month in February is Firefighter Arlie Russum. Arlie began his career at the Pearl Fire Department on April 1, 2008. He works as a firefighter and a relief driver on A Shift. Arlie has logged over 1000 training hours at the State Fire Academy and is also a Nationally Registered EMT. He has spent countless hours of his time to train new firefighters and drivers and most recently he developed a new digital scheduling system for his shift to aid his Battalion Chief with staffing on a daily basis.  Arlie participated in the Lieutenant’s promotional exam in October 2015 and is set to promote to Lieutenant this summer in preparation for the opening of Station 5 on Greenfield Road.  Arlie is married to Katie and they have 2 children, Brayden and Aubree.

We are proud to announce that the Firefighter of the month in December is Lieutenant Todd Burkes.  Todd has been with the Pearl Fire Department since April 1, 2008 and has documented thousands of training hours with the State Fire Academy.   He was promoted to Lieutenant in June 2013. Recently he graduated in the top of the class in the NFPA 1933 Fire Investigator class.  Todd also conducts several fire safety education programs at Pearl Schools throughout the year.  Todd graduated from Pearl High School and is married to Lindsey.  They have three children, Anna Michael, Gracie Lou, and Kendall.

We are proud to announce that the City of Pearl Firefighter of the Month in October is Firefighter Robert Marzoni.  Robert began work with Pearl Fire Department in April 2015.  He graduated from Belhaven University in May 2013 with a B.S. degree in Biology. He was also a pitcher on the Belhaven Blazers baseball team.  Robert has completed his initial in house training and is scheduled to go to the Fire Academy in February.  On October 3, 2015 while he and his wife Chelsea were on their honeymoon in St. Lucia, they were taking an excursion on a small boat when another man on the boat fell overboard.  The man, who appeared intoxicated, was unable to swim and appeared to be in distress.  Robert jumped in and was able to take the man to shore.  The unknown man survived without any injuries and Robert and his wife were able to enjoy the rest of their honeymoon.  Robert has a great future ahead of him as a firefighter and we look will continue to support him as he furthers his career.  Robert works at Fire Station 4 on Hwy 80 on B Shift under Battalion Chief Ricky Purvis.

We are happy to announce that the City of Pearl Firefighter of the Month is Firefighter Justin Allen. Justin has over 1000 hours at the Mississippi State Fire Academy in the 3 short years that he has been a firefighter. He has shown a strong determination to better himself and his department by attending Critical Care Paramedic School and also assists others as they are attending classes and learning new skills. Justin is a great role model and asset to the city of Pearl and the Pearl Fire Department. He is well respected among his fellow firefighters who nominated him for this award.

On June 4th, 2015 Pearl Fire Department’s Engine 2 responded to a call for help.  There was a report of an individual locked inside a car and having a seizure.  Engine 2 arrived on the scene with Lieutenant Aaron LaRue, Driver Brad Phillips, and Firefighter Ryan Lee.  The crew went right to work forcing entry into the vehicle and getting the patient out.  The 21 year old patient was not breathing and also did not have a pulse.  The crew administered CPR and defibrillation with an AED.  The patient responded well and had a pulse before leaving the scene in the ambulance.  Firefighter Lee rode to the hospital with the patient and assisted the ambulance crew with care until the patient was handed off in the emergency room.  The quick actions of this crew saved the young man’s life and he is still recovering today.
